The Bogle family has been engaged in farming in Clarksburg since the 1870s, when Civil War soldier Captain AJ Boyle migrated from Tennessee to California with his nephew Samuel. It wasn’t until the fourth generation that the family shifted to growing grapes, which were initially sold to local wineries. In 1978, the Bogles ventured into making their own wine, with subsequent generations further developing and expanding the winemaking enterprise.

Presently, the sixth generation, represented by siblings Warren, Jody, and Ryan, oversees the winery and is dedicated to conserving the land for future Boyle generations. They are committed to meeting California’s stringent sustainability standards and have attained Certified Green status for their grape cultivation. The first grape variety planted on the family’s property was Petite Sirah in 1968 by Warren Boyle, which holds a special significance in the family’s wine collection.

This wine is aged in American oak barrels for a year, imparting smoky toast and cedar hints to the ripe blueberry and dark cherry aromas and flavors. The wine’s rich taste and velvety texture make it an ideal match for dishes like braised ribs or roast lamb.

Grapes are carefully harvested at peak ripeness, then sorted, de-stemmed, and gently pressed before undergoing cold soaking. Extended maceration extracts the vibrant colors, flavors, and aromas that define exceptional wines. French oak barrels contribute complexity, layers, depth, and elegance to the final product.

Randall Grahm, who initially studied philosophy, shifted his focus to wine and earned a viticulture degree from UC Davis. In 1983, he established Bonny Doon in a small town in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, making a significant impact on the local wine industry. He is now affectionately called the śRhone Rangerť for his efforts to introduce traditional Rhone grape varieties to the United States.

At Bonny Doon, the winemaking approach prioritizes high-quality grapes and minimal interference in the cellar to showcase the unique characteristics of the terroir and grape varieties. One of their notable wines is Le Cigare Blanc, a sophisticated Rhone-style white blend of Grenache Blanc and Roussanne grapes grown using biodynamic methods. The grape must is fermented in aged 60-gallon barrels with regular lees stirring during aging.

This wine boasts aromas of white peach, apricot, beeswax, lavender, and quince, while the first taste reveals vibrant citrus, ripe pears, and hints of fennel. With its well-rounded texture and medium body, this wine pairs excellently with dishes like roast chicken, fish in creamy sauce, or vegetable gratins.

Situated in the quaint town of Bonny Doon in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this winery holds a prominent position in California due to their groundbreaking efforts in introducing Rhone grape varieties to the United States. Renowned winemaker Randall Grahm’s passion for wine emerged during his studies in philosophy, leading him to pursue a viticulture degree at UC Davis. Established in 1983, Bonny Doon has since become a key player for producing minimal intervention wines from Rhone grape varieties on exceptional Californian soil.

Their signature wine, Le Cigare Volant, is named after a peculiar law enacted in 1954 in Chateauneuf du Pape prohibiting UFOs from landing in the vineyards. This distinct wine is made from Grenache, cool climate Syrah, and 100-year-old Mourvedre vines in Contra Costa County, with a blend that also includes Cinsault from 120-year-old vines. The aroma is characterized by intense scents of crushed dark berries, licorice, and spices, while the taste offers a full-bodied experience with firm tannins and vibrant flavors of cassis, raspberry, and dried fruits.
